Time to book your winter tyres
From 1 December, winter tyres are compulsory in winter road conditions, and this requirement remains in force until 31 March. October and November are the busiest weeks of the year at tyre centres — if you book early, you’ll get a time that suits you rather than one that’s left over.

A summer swap that also checks what winter did
Winter is hard on wheels. Hitting a pothole at speed or a ridge of ice can be enough to knock the alignment out, and it often only shows in April when the car starts pulling to one side. Since wheel alignment has been our speciality since 1976, we look at how the tyres have worn when they come off – if the wear is uneven, we tell you before your summer tyres start wearing the same way.
Tread depth on summer tyres
The law requires at least 1.6 mm, but on wet roads grip drops and the risk of aquaplaning rises long before that. We measure at every swap and tell you honestly whether your tyres will last another summer.
Do not run winter tyres all summer
Friction tyres are allowed all year, but on warm, dry tarmac braking distances get longer and the tyres wear fast. Studded tyres may only be used after 15 April if road conditions require it.

When can I switch to summer tyres in Sweden?
The winter tyre requirement ends on 31 March and studded tyres may be used until 15 April, or longer if road conditions call for it. Swap once the risk of snow and ice has passed.
When do studded tyres have to come off?
After 15 April, studded tyres may only be used if there are, or may be, winter road conditions. In practice most people in Borås switch to summer tyres in April.
What is the minimum tread depth for summer tyres?
At least 1.6 mm by law. On wet roads grip gets noticeably worse before that, so we tell you when your tyres are getting close.
Can I drive on friction tyres in summer?
Yes, friction tyres are legal all year. But on warm, dry tarmac braking distances get longer and the tyres wear faster, so summer tyres are the better choice.
How much does it cost to switch to summer tyres?
Swapping to summer wheels already fitted on rims costs SEK 350 for a standard car. Fitting new tyres onto your rims is a separate job – call for a price.
Why does my car pull to one side after winter?
Potholes, ridges of ice and frost damage can knock your wheel angles out. If the car pulls or the steering wheel is crooked, the alignment needs checking – we can measure on the same visit.
How old can summer tyres be?
There is no legal limit, but rubber hardens with age. The manufacturing week is printed on the sidewall as four digits, for example 1220 for week 12 of 2020.

Yes. We recommend tyres based on how and how much you drive, from budget to premium, and give you a quote before ordering anything.
Can you store my winter wheels over summer?
Yes, in our tyre storage for SEK 900. We check their condition and let you know before autumn if they need replacing.
When should I book my summer swap?
Ideally in March. April is one of the busiest times of the year for tyre workshops, and booking early gets you a time that suits you.
Do my summer wheels need balancing?
If they have had new tyres since last season, yes. If the steering wheel vibrates at speed after the swap, a balancing weight may have come off.
Where is the workshop?
At Södra Däckvägen 3 in the Nordskogen industrial area of Borås. Turn in at Stena Metall and continue further in – we are on the inside of the area.
